Even for those filters that arenât as overtly offensive, they subtly reinforce white superiority and reveal the lack of diversity in the productâs creators. Many of the lenses (flower crown, butterfly crown) whitewash usersâ skin and lighten their eye color. She goes on to say that Iâve deleted Snapchat. Iâd urge you to do the same. Theyâve repeatedly demonstrated their blasé attitude towards issues of diversity, inclusion and representation. I donât know what their diversity numbers look like, but even if there are people of color working there, theyâre clearly not (a) in positions where they feel comfortable speaking up or (b) their input isnât valued at the same level as some white male exec. Who Makes the Product and Who Approves It Matters So why has Snapchat twice released filters that should have been flagged for violating the platforms own terms of service? And why has it continued to seemingly misunderstand user complaints? Zhus pointed question about the composite of Snapchats staff is key here: it is in fact overwhelmingly white and male. Last year co-founder Evan Spiegel told Recode that This is sort of the challenge, and I should have exact percentages for you but we just donât think about diversity in terms of numbers that way. Simply reminding managers that unconscious biases play a role in their decision-making cant remove those biases wholesale, and it doesnt do much in terms of decisively changing company culture. Diversity programs require concrete data, planning and commitment. Only last month Facebook, a company which has previously committed to diversifying its workforce, blamed the educational pipeline for its failure to meet hiring goals. In particular, technical roles among the highest paying and most fundamentally influential are the hardest for women and racial minorities to break into at Facebook and many other firms. Its these sorts of roles that determine how the product works and what it looks like. Its these workers who build filters at Snapchat or support features at Twitter and build the algorithms that make the apps we use work. When these roles are overwhelmingly filled by white men, we get products that work for a narrow segment of the population and in some cases like that of Snapchats filter problem that actively alienate or hurt people. The anime filter is another public relations disaster that the company seems determined to brush off, but beyond that, its an incident that has hurt and in some cases permanently alienated users. Although its user base continues to grow at an astonishing rate, Snapchat can ill afford to continue this pattern when more established competitors like Instagram have begun to imitate its core product and when Snapchat itself is trying hard to lure advertisers, recruiters and brands. Its hard to do business on a platform that keeps offending the very user base that people with money to spend want to target. What Snapchats anime filter does though, above all, is cast doubt on the companys claims to respect its users and to want a more diverse workforce. Its hard to rebuild trust and credibility after incidents like this. Snapchat execs and spokespeople can expect to be questioned about their filters and their workforce diversity numbers for months to come.

The 2017 Allstate/USA TODAY Small Business Barometer, a study that combines federal data with a national survey of nearly 2,800 small-business owners, finds that the ease with which small business owners can get the commodities they need has gone down considerably since the 2016 Barometer release. Meanwhile, unemployment continues to fall, which means more people are finding jobs â" a good thing for the economy, but also a reason hiring good staff may be a challenge right now. Despite these headwinds, the nationâs small business owners are incredibly optimistic about the future, with a nationwide optimism score of 92 out of 100 on the Allstate/USA TODAY Barometer. Seattle is not far behind with a score of 88. So, whatâs the secret to small business success? Seattle entrepreneur Paul Vogel, 48, owner of an Allstate Insurance agency with offices in the University District, says small business owners improve their chances when they do a combination of these five things: Adapt to changing surroundings and demographics. Technology, neighborhoods and peopleâs tastes and needs all change. Your business should roll with the times, Vogel said. With more high-rise buildings and condos going up in the neighborhoods he serves, meaning fewer cars, Vogel has adapted by marketing car insurance to the whole state. He also altered his product for apartment dwellers who do have cars, offering protection from incidents in parking garages and lots, rather than driveways. Get involved in the community. Among the best things you can do to gain the trust of your neighbors and visibility for your business are volunteering for local charities and contributing to local causes. Vogel coaches little league baseball, soccer and basketball, and he volunteers for the Boy Scouts and at local Rotary Clubs. âBy being in the community, we really get to network with folks who could use our services,â he said. Hire the right people. Whether itâs from friends, peers in your industry, or even the competition try getting referrals for new hires from people you know and trust, Vogel said. Send along the job description and tell them the type of person youâre looking for. Because these contacts know your business well and have likely vetted who they put you in contact with, a referral is far more likely to be someone who performs well and meshes with you, your employees and your customers. Build relationships with customers. Youâll build loyalty and trust in your products or services. Vogel and his colleagues make phone calls to get to know their customers, while other small business owners he knows host customer appreciation events like barbecues and picnics or mingle with their customers at community events. Know the lay of the land. Stay up-to-date on city government programs and policies that affect your industry to ensure your business has everything it needs to succeed. Many municipalities have email alerts you can sign up for. When Vogel turns in his tax forms each year, he makes a habit of checking in with city government to see if any insurance commission laws have changed. Vogel emphasizes that a successful small business is not just measured in company earnings, number of loyal customers, and name recognition.
